ModoRead

Read English PDFs with bilingual translation

To read an English PDF with translation, start with a document that contains selectable text. A bilingual reader can present extracted sentences alongside translations, letting you check meaning while keeping the English in view. In ModoRead, you can also listen to English sentences when a speech service is available.

Check the PDF before importing

Try selecting and copying a paragraph in your usual PDF viewer. If it copies as readable text in the right order, it is a useful starting point. If nothing can be selected, the pages may be scanned images. If the copied text is garbled, translation will inherit those errors.

Begin with a short, single-column document. Multi-column papers, tables, footnotes and repeated headers can interrupt the reading order. Keep the original PDF open when layout matters.

From PDF to bilingual reading

  1. Open ModoRead and choose your native language in the reader.
  2. Import a PDF you have permission to use. Check a few extracted paragraphs against the original.
  3. Read the English sentence, then use its translation to resolve unclear meaning.
  4. Play the English audio when available, and reread a short section before moving on.

The aim is a readable text view. Do not assume that the bilingual version preserves the PDF's page layout, figures, equations or tables. For a repeatable study routine, see the bilingual reading guide.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scanned page needs optical character recognition (OCR) before it can be treated as text. The standard ModoRead import should not be assumed to run OCR automatically. Create a searchable copy with an OCR tool first, check the recognized text, then import that copy.

OCR mistakes in letters, punctuation and line breaks can change both sentence boundaries and meaning. Proofread a sample before relying on translations from a long scanned document.

Common problems to check

Sentences appear in the wrong order

Compare the extracted passage with the original page. Columns and footnotes may have been mixed together. Where you have an editable source, exporting clean TXT or Markdown can make the order easier to control.

The translation sounds wrong

Check the source text first for broken words, missing punctuation and OCR errors. Then read the surrounding paragraph: a short sentence may depend on context that the translation did not capture. Verify unfamiliar terminology separately.

The file will not import

Confirm that it opens normally and is not damaged. A password-protected or restricted document may need an accessible copy from its owner. Do not remove access restrictions from material you are not authorized to use.

PDF or EPUB for long reading?

PDF is useful when you need the original page as a reference. EPUB is designed around flowing text and may be a better starting point for a long book when both formats are available. ModoRead also accepts TXT, Markdown and SRT; subtitle files provide text, not the original video or its audio.

Keep a copy of the source

Translation and speech can depend on external services. Check whether a document is appropriate to process before importing confidential material. Keep the original file and verify important details there, especially numbers, names and technical terms.
